What's on
Exhibitions at Tate Britain
Alongside the free collection, the gallery runs a changing programme of ticketed shows.
- Collection displays
- Free and always open
- Major shows
- Ticketed, timed entry
- Turner Prize
- Held here in most years
- Duveen Galleries
- Free large-scale commissions
How the programme works
There are usually one or two large ticketed exhibitions running at a time, plus free displays that rotate through the collection routes. The Duveen Galleries in the centre of the building host a big free commission — often the most striking thing you'll see all day.
For the current line-up and dates, check the official listings on tate.org.uk. We keep this page focused on how to plan rather than repeating a schedule that changes.
Correct as of August 2026 — check tate.org.uk before you travel.
The Turner Prize
Britain's best-known contemporary art award is closely tied to Tate Britain, and in the years it is held here the exhibition of shortlisted artists draws a very different crowd from the Turner watercolours upstairs. It is usually ticketed and busy in the final weeks.
Booking advice
- Weekday mornings are the calmest slots for a big show.
- Book a timed entry at least a few days ahead in school holidays.
- Arrive 10 minutes before your slot — security and cloakroom queues add up.
- See the exhibition first, then browse the free collection with whatever time is left.
