The best time to visit Tate Britain

One of London's calmer big galleries — and calmer still if you time it well.

Quietest
Weekday mornings at 10:00
Busiest
Weekend afternoons
Best season
Autumn and midwinter weekdays
Avoid
School holiday afternoons

Time of day

Arrive at opening, 10:00, and the first hour feels almost private. Between 13:00 and 16:00 the galleries fill with school groups and day-trippers. Late afternoon thins out again, but you'll be ushered out at 18:00.

Day of the week

Tuesday to Thursday are the sweet spot. Mondays can be busy with visitors who found other attractions closed, and Saturday afternoons are the peak.

Time of year

Autumn and the weeks after New Year are lovely: fewer visitors, and the light through the Clore Gallery's upper rooms is gentle. Summer brings more tourists, but the gallery rarely feels crammed the way its riverside sibling can.

Working around a big exhibition

When a major ticketed show is on, book the earliest slot of the day, see the exhibition first, then wander the free collection while everyone else is queueing.

Collection entry is free. Tours and exhibitions may need a ticket.
