Opening times

Tate Britain opens every day from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry shortly before closing. Galleries begin to clear a few minutes before 18:00, so aim to arrive by 16:30 if you want a proper look around.

Times can change on public holidays and over Christmas.

Correct as of August 2026 — check tate.org.uk before you travel.

Do you need a ticket?

No, not for the main collection. The permanent displays are free and you can walk straight in. You only need a ticket for major temporary exhibitions, and for some tours, talks and special events.

Bags, coats and security

There is a quick bag check at the entrance. Large luggage and suitcases are not allowed, so leave them at your hotel or a left-luggage office. A cloakroom takes coats and small bags, and it can get busy at weekends.

Food and drink

There is a café for coffee, sandwiches and cake, and a restaurant for a longer sit-down lunch. Bringing your own food into the galleries is not allowed, but the riverside and nearby gardens are pleasant spots for a picnic in good weather.

Photography

Photography for personal use is generally fine in the free collection displays, without flash or tripods. Temporary exhibitions often have their own rules — look for the signs at the entrance to each room.

Toilets, family facilities and quiet corners

Toilets are on several floors, including accessible and baby-change facilities. The galleries at the far end of the building are usually the calmest, and the Clore Gallery upstairs is a good place to slow down.

Collection entry is free. Tours and exhibitions may need a ticket.
