Getting to Tate Britain

It is easier to reach than people expect — just a little away from the tourist crush.

Address
Millbank, London SW1P 4RG
Nearest tube
Pimlico (Victoria line)
By boat
Tate Boat from Bankside
From Westminster
About a 20-minute walk

By tube

Pimlico on the Victoria line is the closest station, roughly an eight-minute walk. Come out, follow the signs towards Millbank and the river, and the portico appears on your right. Vauxhall is about 15 minutes away, and Westminster around 20 minutes if you fancy walking beside the Thames.

By bus

Routes 87, 88 and C10 stop on Millbank right outside. The 2, 36 and 185 pass nearby on Vauxhall Bridge Road. Contactless cards and Oyster both work — just tap on when you board.

By river: the Tate Boat

The Tate Boat runs along the Thames between Millbank Pier, outside Tate Britain, and Bankside Pier for Tate Modern. It takes about 15 minutes and is the nicest way to link the two galleries in one day. Tickets are bought separately from the gallery, and Travelcard holders usually get a discount.

Correct as of August 2026 — check tate.org.uk before you travel.

Cycling, driving and parking

There are cycle docking stations close by and racks near the entrance. Driving is the hardest option: the gallery sits inside the Congestion Charge zone and there is no visitor car park, only limited metered street parking. Blue Badge holders have a small number of accessible bays on Atterbury Street.

Walking from Westminster

Start at the Houses of Parliament, keep the river on your left and follow Millbank south for about a mile. It is flat, well signposted and one of the calmer riverside walks in central London.

Collection entry is free. Tours and exhibitions may need a ticket.
